Walking in Ramsau am Dachstein

Plateau to the Dachstein glacier: easy-going walking and high Alpine adventure

Surrounded by the gorgeous mountains of the Styrian Enns valley, at the foot of the striking Dachstein south face, the holiday resort of Ramsau am Dachstein, awarded with the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal, is a haven for walkers. Across the three levels – the Ramsau plateau, the Alpine pastures, and the Dachstein glacier, Styria’s roof – there is nothing left to be desired. Lush meadows, striking peaks, crystal clear brooks, and fresh air created a great day out in the Styrian mountains. Have a rest during your walk or mountain hike at one of the many benches and take in the striking views across Ramsau to the ski resorts of Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen, and Reiteralm.

Many of the well-signposted hiking routes that make up the 200-kilometre network are set up as loop walks. Uniform signposting that follows international standards makes it easy to find the right way at the foot of the Dachstein. Theme trails such as the Bible Path or the Dachstein Glacier Walk combine impressive natural settings with an informative excursion through the history, tradition, and culture of the Dachstein region.

In Ramsau, the youngest family members have the most fun. Along special playfully designed themed children’s trails, kids enjoy hiking while exploring the great outdoors.

On the Ramsau plateau (1,100 to 1,400 metres), there are flat walking trails and easy-going family hiking paths. Up on the Alpine pastures (1,700 to 1,900 metres), not only traditional mountain shelters and Alpine lodges can be found but also beautiful walks with impressive views across the lower Tauern mountains of Styria. Ramsau am Dachstein’s hiking trails are suitable for everyone, no matter what level of ability or fitness.

Also, many steep mountain tracks can be accessed in Ramsau am Dachstein and on day hikes up to the high Alpine terrain. Up in the glacier area, take on one of the many spectacular Via ferratas or rocky routes up to Styria’s highest mountains.
